invictus

invictus, by william ernest henley...

out of the night that covers me,
black as the Pit from pole to pole,
i thank whatever gods may be
for my unconquerable soul.

in the fell clutch of circumstance
i have not winced nor cried aloud,
under the bludgeonings of chance
my head is bloody but unbowed.

beyond this place of wrath and tears
looms but the horror of the shade,
and yet the menace of the years
finds, and shall find me unafraid.

it matters not how strait the gate,
how charged with punishments the scroll
i am the master of my fate;
i am the captain of my soul.

the title means "invincible" or "unconquerable"...
to me, it basically means that nothing in this world would make me say, "i give up"... i'm going to keep on standing no matter what problem hits me right in the face... i'm going to steer my own boat and lead myself out of every storm that comes my way...
it's all about the will power of choosing your own destiny and being courageous enough to pursue your dreams...

(OT) oh man.. i wish i wrote that on the quiz... sigh.. things just come to me when its just too late... i guess i posted this poem because i was irritated by the fact that our teacher wrote the last two lines (which we were going to interpret) wrongly...

"i am master of my fate:
i am master of my soul."

it's my favorite poem! i tried to correct him once but i guess my voice didn't reach his ears... sigh... oh well... sorry about harping on that teacher again... sigh... loner (OT)

Sauce! What kind of English teacher is he? No self-respecting English major would write down caveman English!

Invictus. I was introduced to this poem in my freshman year. It was in Journalism class. We even had to memorize it.

Also I remember this being recited in an episod of One Tree Hill.

it matters not how strait the gate,
how charged with punishments the scroll
i am the master of my fate;
i am the captain of my soul.

hmm. I seem to remember the second line of this stanza differently. Oh well.
